British Drug-Smuggling Grandmother Sentenced to Death
A Balinese court sentenced a British grandmother to death for trying to smuggle cocaine onto the island. While 56-year-old Lindsay Sandiford had expected a harsh jail term, with her prosecutors seeking about 15 years in prison, what the panel of Indonesian judges gave her was far worse: facing a firing squad.
Indonesia has long been known for its harsh and unrelenting punishment for drug offenders. Despite her clean record and cooperation, the court ruled that she tarnished Bali’s image and obstructed the fight against drugs.
