“Baraatis” Protest Marriage Law Amendment

by Admin on August 10, 2012

India has introduced a law expanding the grounds for divorce .  The new law refers to “Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage” (IrBM) by way of the Marriage Laws (Amendment Bill 2010).

A group of “baraatis” have been protesting it. The “baraatis” travel with a suited-up fake groom who hands out pamphlets against the law at a fake marriage ceremony titled Fakkaro ki Barat, which roughly translate as marriage procession of the bankrupt. The message is to convey that the proposed change in law would make men bankrupt and is gender biased.

The new law states that a wife can oppose IrBM while a husband cannot. Furthermore, after divorce, the form wife will continue to receive 50 per cent of what the former husband earns.

The protest was organized by Yogesh, general secretary of Army Against Dowry Act Misuse in Indian (AADMI). One man in the group is fighting a case filed against him under 498A of the Indian Penal code which deals with “husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty.” AADMI plans to hand over a memorandum to the chief minister this week.

Thailand divorce law allows for consensual divorce without asserting grounds providing the divorcing couple were married in Thailand.
