A 71-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after a California court convicted him of having sex with underage boys in Thailand.

Documents released by the Department of Justice state that the man, Paul Alan Shapiro, had been making regular trips to Thailand for the past 20 years with the goal of engaging in sexual intercourse with boys under 16.

In 2012, Shapiro was arrested in the bathroom of a Pattaya mall having sex with 13-year-old boy who he had paid 300 baht.

According to Thailand criminal defense attorneys, Pattaya has not only a reputation as one of the world’s most famous destinations for sex tourists, but is also known as a place where pedophilia often flies under the radar.

After spending three years in jail in Thailand, Shapiro was pardoned and deported to the US to face charges.

Shapiro also must serve 20 years of supervised release after his prison sentence, and pay two of his pedophilia victims $20,000 each for compensation.
