Chinese Lawyer Sues Government Over Torture Allegations

by Admin on September 22, 2015

A Chinese rights lawyer is suing the government for his alleged torture at the hands of the authorities during an 87-day secret detention, reports Radio Free Asia.

Cai Ying was held under “residential surveillance,” having been accused of bribery, perjury and fraud in the city of YuanJiang from July-October 2012.

He wrote a letter about his ordeal, which was subsequently published on the internet, resulting in his release and the charges dropped. He also received an official apology.

He is now seeking formal compensation.

His lawyers argue that he was framed for his arrest by judicial authorities.

Cai said:

“This case isn’t just about compensation; it’s also about illegal detention and so-called residential surveillance, which in reality is extrajudicial detention.”

China’s ‘authoritarian communist regime’ has been accused recently of crimes against human rights.

Contrary to popular perception, practicing law can be a dangerous profession in any country. In Venezuela, an American attorney working on global business transactions was murdered in his home this August.

Another prominent example is the strange circumstances surrounding the death of Clinton counsel lawyer Vincent Foster, who allegedly committed suicide; however there are numerous more sinister theories.

In Thailand prominent Muslim activist lawyer Somchai Neelapaijithas been missing since 2004. The wife of the Thai attorney has been fighting to re-open the investigation.
