Department of Justice announces end to private prisons

The Department of Justice in the US announced on Thursday that all private prisons will be phased out of the federal corrections system. At least 13 private prison contracts will be allowed to expire by 2021.

According to Matthew Crowley, a Virginia criminal defense attorney, this change resulted from reports made by an Inspector General stating that private prisons have a higher incidence of violence and rule infractions by both prisoners and staff alike as compared to government-run facilities.
