Netflix last week announced that it would give new parents unlimited paid time off for a year following the birth/adoption of a child.

Microsoft swiftly followed suit in a move not quite so generous – but still impressive. New mothers will now be entitled to an additional 12 weeks paid parental leave, on top of the current eight weeks maternity leave the firm offer. In total, a new mother can take 20 weeks paid leave, and fathers 12 weeks. In an announcement on their blog, Kathleen Hogan, Executive VP of Human Resources explains the decision:

“As we ask our employees to bring their “A” game to work every day to achieve our mission, we believe it’s our responsibility to create an environment where people can do their best work.”

Thai paternity lawyers Chaninat and Leeds have decades of experience in family law cases, including establishing the rights of foreign fathers and proving paternity outside of marriage.

Tawni Cranz, Chief Talent Officer at Netflix said:

“Netflix’s continued success hinges on us competing for and keeping the most talented individuals in their field.”

Although the move has received a great deal of praise, some argue that the flexible policy will actually cause new parents to head back to the office faster, due to guilt about taking too much time off.

A 2013 report from the Pew Research Center states that Estonia in Eastern Europe offers the most paid time off for parental leave – about 2 years.
