A judge in Texas said that God told him the defendant was innocent and asked the jury to reconsider after they found the woman guilty.
Gloria Romero Perez was charged with sex trafficking and the sale or purchase of a child but Comal County Judge Jack Robison argued on her behalf to the jurors after he claimed God told him she was innocent.
Despite the judge’s holy protestations, the jury still found the woman guilty.
Defending drug cases in Thailand is far more common than human trafficking cases. Human trafficking cases typically become an issue in surrogacy cases.
A commission which investigated the issue found that Judge Robinson was under intense stress from the death of a friend and two medical experts said the lapse was due to “delirium”.
The woman was sentenced to 25 years but due to the judge’s mishandling of the situation, the case will undergo a retrial.
