Leaked Documents Expose Mass Tax Evasion
The findings from over 2.5 million files of leaked financial information on offshore accounts was released last week from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The documents contain confidential information on over 120,000 offshore accounts, including those that belong to politicians, CEOs, Wall Street investors and the like. ICIJ sifted through the information to publish a report, titled “Secrecy for Sale,” detailing the findings.
Some of the key findings include:
– The use of covert companies and bank accounts for government officials and their families in numerous countries, including Thailand.
– Those offshore accounts are used to hide “mansions, yachts, art masterpieces and other assets, gaining tax advantages and anonymity not available to average people.”
– Top banks and an industry of accountants and “middle-men” have been aiding in maintaining the anonymity and secrecy of the offshore accounts and the account holders.
PolicyMic reports that the amount of data included in the leak is 160 times larger than that of the US State Department’s info leak from WikiLeaks in 2010, and has a report on the main takeaways from the leak.
