Canadian Politicians Pledge to Repeal Prostitution Law

Last Thursday’s ‘Proud to Vote’ debate in Toronto, Canada, saw representatives from Liberal, NDP and Green parties, pledge to repeal Bill C-36, the ‘anti-sex-work law’ which made headlines worldwide when it was adopted by the Conservative government in 2014.

As Now Toronto reports, the law was a result of the Supreme Court’s 2013 promise to make strides to protect sex workers.

Bill C-36 followed what has previously been dubbed “the Swedish model,” after Sweden decriminalized the buying of sex, but not the selling in 1999. Those in favor of this model argue that it gives those selling sex legitimate rights, reduces abuse and trafficking.

However, the move has drawn criticism from numerous women’s rights groups who argue it does the opposite of what it intends.

Consider this article that argues that the European countries that have since followed Sweden (Norway, Iceland, Spain), have reported legalization merely increased demand and overall added to the problem.

“Countries with legalized prostitution have a statistically significantly larger reported incidence of human trafficking inflows.”

US immigration lawyers in Thailand Chaninat and Leeds have a team of fully bilingual licensed US immigration attorneys, who have decades of experience managing the US visa application process for Thai nationals.

In August of this year, Amnesty International sparked outcries of both celebration and fury when delegates voted in the majority to legalize prostitution in this way.

Although the vote does not change any laws, it is thought that it will heavily influence lawmakers. Indeed, in the past fortnight alone Ukraine announced a draft law to legalize the industry.

Despite Thailand’s reputation for being a “sexpat” destination, prostitution is illegal in the country.
