Court Strikes Down Data Collection Of EU Citizens
The European Union, in contrast to the US Government, has been very open about collecting communications information of citizens for the last 8 years, but now the European High Court has ruled that this is illegal reports Arstechnica.
The case was brought by activists at Digital Rights Ireland and the Austrian Working Group on Data Retention.

The data collection process began following terrorist attacks in Madrid and London. The EU Court ruled that “the directive interferes in a particularly serious manner with the fundamental rights to respect for private life and to the protection of personal data”.
It will take a little longer however before EU citizens notice the impact of the ruling, as each member state must now incorporate the law on a domestic level.
