Hot! Liquefying Dead Bodies Legalized in California

A law was passed in California on Sunday, allowing residents to choose a little-known form of cremation which involves completely liquefying the body, Inverse reports.

The new legislation, AD 967, was passed by Governor Jerry Brown in order to provide a more environmentally-friendly way of treating bodies after death.

The process, which is formally known as ‘aqua cremation’, works by bathing the body in a strong alkali chemical solution with water, which is heated to up to 350°F. This is effectively an accelerated form of natural decomposition, and reduces a body to mainly a liquid state.

Ashes can still be returned to the family after this process, as remaining bone fragments can be crushed.

The bill will become effective on July 1st, 2020.
