Thailand to Vote on Same-Sex Union Bill This Year
Thailand’s House of Representatives is set to consider a same-sex union bill later this year, reports The Nation. The newspaper interviewed gender rights activist Chumaporn Taengkliang, who has been asked to gather at least 10,000 signatures to make the push for the bill more effective. Chumaporn stated that incorporating the needs of transgender people will also be important discussion, as they are not covered in the current bill.
Compared to the rest of Asia, Chumaporn said Thailand is joined by three other countries pushing for same-sex rights: Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand.
“If we push it through first, we will become pioneers in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Chumaporn. “The process in Vietnam is still in its inception as they are trying to petition the court, while in Taiwan it’s about rewriting the marriage law. Thailand has the best chance, if it is put for debate in the House.”
