Vet Charged with Shooting Former SEAL Sniper
Former Navy SEAL and “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle, 38, was shot to death by an ex-Marine veteran at a Texas gun range on Sunday. The gunman, 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh, also shot and killed another man during the incident, Chad Littlefield, 35.
Kyle and Littlefield had taken Routh, believed to have PTSD, to the gun range as a sort of bonding experience, according to friends of the victim. Kyle owned a non-profit, FITCO Cares, that helped veterans of war adjust and provided at-home fitness equipment for emotionally and physically wounded vets.
In his best-selling book, Kyle detailed his life as a sniper in Iraq, claiming that he had taken more lives than most snipers. Kyle had served four tours in Iraq with the Navy Seals. According to friends of the victim, Kyle and Routh had occasionally spent time together and were considered “workout buddies.”
Routh, unemployed and in the Marine’s Reserve, used a semi-automatic handgun in the shooting. Officials are uncertain of Routh’s motives, and said he had a clean criminal record.
