Indonesian Zoo Criticized for Smoking Orangutan
According to reports, a zoo in Bandung has repeatedly made headlines for the mistreatment of its animals. A recent video has surfaced on the internet of a man throwing his half smoked lit cigarette into an orangutan’s enclosure. The video showed the orangutan proceeding to pick up the lit cigarette and smoke it.
The zoo has been slammed by animal rights activists that refer to the video as evidence of the “lack of supervision and education at the zoo”. In addition, there is a petition on change.org for the closure of the Bandung Zoo.
A zoo spokesperson told the press that the establishment regrets the incident with the orangutan and mentions that the zoo does have signs to prohibit smoking around the animals or feeding them.
An animal rights activist has also blamed the Indonesian government for not implementing tougher animal protection laws.
