Activists Push for Jury Nullification in Silk Road Trial
With Ross Ulbricht’s trial underway, jury rights activists are spreading the message of jury nullification in hopes of keeping Ulbricht out of jail, reports Voctiv.
Ulbricht is under trial in New York for allegedly creating and managing the Silk Road, a black market website.
According to Voctiv, some activists and libertarian groups believe that Ulbricht’s convictions and subsequent trial are unjust because “simply operating a website shouldn’t land you in prison.”
One such activist group, The Jury Rights Project, raised money before the Silk Road trial to install advertisements about jury nullification around New York, according to DeepDotWeb.
Jury nullification is a grey are of legal law, but is when the jury members rule innocent a defendant they find guilty because they believe the “crime” of which he/she is committed shouldn’t be labeled a crime.
