Bangkok’s Sinking Land Could Mean Greater Floods
While Thai researchers knew the city of Bangkok was sinking, new images from the first Thai earth-observation satellite shows it might be sinking faster than previously thought.
The satellite images and data, combined with data analyses from other sources, suggest future flooding might be worse than that of 2011. Erosion and a rising sea level means Bangkok and its six surrounding provinces near the lower Chao Praya river basin will be more prone to flooding in the next five to ten years.

Researchers at the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said the consequences would be less severe if the right mechanisms are put in place.
