List of Approved Medical Cannabis Clinics in Thailand

In December 2018, Thailand legalized medical cannabis.

Since that time, research and development at Thai hospitals and universities have led to FDA-approved medical cannabis products that can be obtained not just at certain government hospitals, but also at registered clinics.

The first 10,000 bottles of medical cannabis oil were distributed to patients with a prescription from a certified medical doctor or Thai traditional medical practitioner in August of this year.

Thailand’s foray into medical marijuana is heavily regulated, however, and the improper or recreational use of cannabis is still punishable by up to five years in prison.

THC vs. CBD Clinics in Thailand

According to some experts, Thailand recently decriminalized cannabidiol (CBD). Because of that, there are some reports on online forums of clinics using this as a way of selling CBD to customers expecting THC.

These clinics claim to prescribe and distribute THC-infused medical cannabis. In reality, their products are hemp-derived CBD oils that contain only trace amounts of THC.

THC and CBD are two different cannabinoids with different medical uses and effects on the mind and body. THC, unlike CBD, is psychoactive–meaning it gives off the feeling of being “high”.

Due to the shaky legal footing of both THC and CBD in Thailand, experts advise patients only to use or possess the two substances if they have a valid medical prescription from a doctor who is fully licensed by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Anything less could run the risk of a lengthy prison term or a hefty fine.

Hospitals That Can Prescribe Medical Cannabis

All hospitals under the Public Health Ministry have been granted permission by the Thai FDA to prescribe medical cannabis to patients.

So far (as of November 2019), however, there is a huge shortage in the supply of medical cannabis products being grown by the Government Pharmaceutical Organization as well as partner hospitals and universities. As supply increases in the coming months, more hospitals and clinics will be able to prescribe medical cannabis.

Currently, here are the state-run hospitals that can prescribe medical cannabis oil:
